Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer

January 2, 2007

Recently, my aunt and uncle came to visit us in Baker City, Oregon. Being such a small town, we actually had to spend time together. It turned out to be not so bad (!!!!!).

Anyway, they both raved about a show that they had been watching called the “Dog Whisperer”, and how amazing this dog-guru was. Being dog lovers and caretakers, I was eager to look more into it.

So for Christmas, I bought my husband Cesar Milan’s book.

Cesar's Way, The Dog Whisperer

I’ve never known Whitey to finish a book so quickly — a day and a half later, my husband not only finished the book, but was determined to “Master The Walk”.

Mastering the Walk entails being able to walk your dog on a leash, while never allowing the dog to walk ahead of you or pull on the leash. If you’ve ever met Barkley, you’d know that this is a virtually impossible task. Here’s our stubborn pup, Barkley:

Barkley, Sunriver OregonBarkley catching his Ruff Wear FrisbeeBarkley, Deschutes RiverBarkley, Brindle Greyhound Spaniel

While Barkley is a loving, kind, sweet dog, he’s also the devil. Yes. Satan. He pulls so hard on a leash, it hurts. It hurts whoever is at the end of the leash, as well as his own throat, and sometimes he’d have a cough so bad after a walk that we’d feel guilty taking him again.

Enter CESAR MILLAN, Dog Whisperer.

After Whitey read his book, he announced that we would be walking the dogs the next morning.

WHAT?!???

Sure enough, as soon as we woke up, Whitey was getting the leashes ready, and informing me of the rules.

We must be calm before they were allowed to walk. We must leave the doorway before we allowed the dogs to. We must never allow the dogs to walk before us. We must be crazy.

Okay, the last one was not really a rule, but what I thought when he explained all of the rules.

And yet, he was right.

I have never, NEVER, been able to walk our Rottweiler on a leash with such ease. The dog practically asked me to guide him by the time we got home. And Barkley, while still a more difficult dog, had such a different demeanor that Whitey proclaimed him as “cured”.

Since then, we’ve found “The Dog Whisperer” TV show on the National Geographic Channel, and have watched about ten episodes in the last three days. The guy is a friggen genius. Seriously. He’s got about 35 dogs (no, not a typo), and he walks ALL OF THEM TOGETHER without leashes.

The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan

They all walk behind him, and love it. And these aren’t special dogs, they’re all pound-puppies, “free-to-good-home”, or about to be put down dogs. Aggressive, vicious, fearful, depressed….. dogs that have serious issues. And yet they’re all the kind of dogs you’d meet and want as your own.

If you have a dog, you owe it to yourself to read Cesar’s book. Also, try to find his shows on your cable channels. If not, he’s got a DVD collection, but the book says it all. The shows just have more impact and make you a believer.

Not like those religious shows, mind you.

One of these days, I’ll post a video of Barkley on our treadmill. It will make more sense if you’ve seen “The Dog Whisperer” or have read Cesar’s book. Really. Our hyperactive dog doing a 2.0mph on a 3% incline is enough to make anyone a believer, especially those that know Barkley. And it only took three days of training for Barkley to get excited about it. Dang straight. Just wait until we get the Rottweiler cruising at a 5mph trot on it. Pure genius.

Cesar Millan is truly a dog genius.

Here’s a video that another gal made of walking her large dogs that were normally BAD DOGS on leashes. She watched two episodes of “The Dog Whisperer” and was amazed at how great her dogs became:

And here’s a short snippet of the guru himself:

  4. Dear Cesar i have been having problems with my 4 month old min pin. She has recently been acting very submissive. She acts this way mostly with my boyfriend who is with her all day. We really don’t know what to do anymore. We don’t even touch her and she will yelp like she is a lot in of pain. We have spoke with the vet and he said she is heathly and that was it. We really don’t know what to do? We need help if there is anything you can do please contact me by e-mail thank you.

  5. Dear Cesar,
I have been an avid fan, protector, and “owner” of Am. Staff. Terriers and Pit bulls for the past 20 plus years. When my beloved Rita passed away at age 12 last year, I was completely devastated and finally a year later, I have adopted another pit bull pup from the shelter. I am having extreme difficulty with getting the basics down with Ginger and I was hoping that perhaps you could contact me. I have great hopes that we can salvage this relationship, but if I can’t get better ( or any) control over this situation, I am afraid that I will have to place her somewhere else and the thought of that rattles my nerves also. I believe she can be turned around, but I am desperate for help. Please contact me and let me know if you can fit this sweet, but trying pup into your busy schedule. I truly appreciate any feedback. Take care.
    Sincerely, Wendy Friedenthal

  6. I have been a fan of Caesar Milan and his wife for some time. I am a vetenary student in Florida. My life goal is to rescue and rehabilitate high aggression canines. I have been rescuing dogs my whole life, now I just need some formal education and I am starting with a bachelor is in Vetenary technology, and then go on to in depth study behavior. Everything I have learned so far, I’ve learned from Ceasar Milan, because it makes sense to me, and more importantly, my dogs understand it! This knowlege has been incredibly helpful Ceasar!

  9. Cesar, HELP me please. I babysit this 81/2 month old lab/boxer 0r pitbull everyday. The owner is going to get rid of her this weekend if I can’t start making her mind. She is so free spirited. I have tried everything I know to train her, but she acts like she doesn’t have nothing upstairs. He got a Rotti 6 months old and she is willing to please him, but poor Izzy wants to play. How & what can I do to make her listen and quite pulling on the leash also. He got your collar, but that doesn’t help. Izzy is such a sweet dog. I have 3 dogs of my own, so I can’t keep her. She will have to go back to the pound where he got her from. If anyone wants her or can HELP me please let me know ASAP. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio.

  10. MR MILLAM, i am in dier need of your help!!!!! My 5 month old puppy does not want to use the bathroom outside. she totally refuses it. i take her outside very often, bascially right after she eats or drinks, thinking she might go. i walk with her for 40 min to an hour. she does not go. as soon as we come home.. she goes in to her spot and uses the bathroom. we even took her wee-wee pad away, but still she manages to find that place and uses the bathroom there. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! =/

  11. Mr. Millan’s training techniques are outdated and potentially harmful to the animals that come under his or his Center’s influence. Shock collars, Flooding and the “touches” that he employs to “snap the dog out of it” all either walk or cross the fine line between positive and negative reinforcement.

You may notice that the dogs he works with on his NG show no longer exhibit the “bad behaviors.” Look closer and you’ll notice they often no longer throw (exhibit) ANY behaviors. This is the mark of an abused and scared dog NOT a happy and reformed one.

  12. Cesar is fantastic. When I picked up my dog Krystal from the shelter, I found all sorts of situations that required thoughtful action. My motto was “What would Cesar do?” I would think about it, and then do it. And, it worked! Cesar is a great help for dog lovers everywhere.

  13. Yes Cesar is the man. I am a dog rehabilitator and behaviourist and find his methods work well. There are many anticesar people out there, and to me their very ill informed. I have worked with dogs to rehabilitate their behaviour and let me tell you, they do not end up scared and void of all emotion. The point is that dogs are dogs not humans. they do not have personality in the way we have. A happy dog is a calm dog.Personality is often just behaviour issues showing themselves. Anyone who has read Marley and me would now this. Whilst this dog was clearly loved for his ” personality” I can assure you he was never truly happy and content with life. This man has made millions from his unfortunate dog, and it’s a crying shame.

  14. Mr.Millan
I am in desperate need of your help. I have a 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier and I hate taking him for a walk. He pulls so hard that by the end of the walk his pads at the bottom of his feet are bleeding. I also have an 11 year old Jack Russell Terrier that walks perfect, that he doesn’t need a leash. I don’t understand why they are so different. My 9 year old is always interested in what is going on around him ex) birds, squirrels, cats other dogs…he goes crazy when he sees them and the walk becomes more intence. There are times when I just want to turn around and come home but I know the exercise is important and I continue the daily 1 hour walk.
