Blue-Green Algae

I read in the Bend newspaper, The Bulletin, that officials are warning people and their pets to “avoid” Odell Lake due to high blue-green algae levels.

Avoid…. LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Blue-green algae will poison you. Dogs die from swimming in water infected with blue-green algae. We recently found a swimming hole nearby to take our dogs to, and I’m going to be much more diligent in looking for the signs of blue-green algae.

Blooms can be obvious, or spread out in a large area (as the above photos show).

TIP: Often sunny periods following heavy rainfall trigger algae blooms. The rain brings in nutrients and the sunlight helps the algae grow quickly.

Thankfully, if you think there is a possibility in your new favorite swimming hole you can call the city and they will send someone out to check for you!

I don’t know that I would have ever heard about this if you hadn’t posted it. Thanks.

(btw, glad you were able to get moving on the construction again so quickly!)
