We had to apply for Workman’s Comp insurance for our new business recently, and I was floored when asked, “Do you have any employees under the age of 15 or over the age of 60?”
Ummm, why is that any of any consequence? I wanted to answer Yes, All of Them.
I replied that yes, we have one person that fits that category, and will probably have more. I then mentioned that it was terribly discriminatory to ask that question to determine what we were paying for our mandated insurance policy. She agreed, but replied that it’s mandated to ask.
Soooo, by law, I can’t ask how old someone is on an application. However, the government is allowed to ask if I’m hiring teenagers or seniors? Something just isn’t right about that…
