We claim to deliver inside of Baker City limits. Every so often, we are asked to deliver outside of town.
Tonight, a customer called and asked if we would deliver between Baker City and Haines. He claimed it was a 4-mile drive, and that he wasn’t able to leave the house. Whitey winced, and then approved, even though the roads are covered in new snow and we were pretty slammed with deliveries.
Old Wingville Road. The delivery ended up being 7.5 miles outside of town, which means a 15-mile round-trip (for those of you mathematically challenged). Fifteen miles combined on a rural highway and gravel roads.
Whitey delivered the $15-dollar pie to the customer who said Thank You, and then handed back his signed credit card receipt while saying, “Oh, and here’s your tip….”,
“Drive safely. It’s slick out there. You could get in a wreck really easy.”
He laughed, waved, and closed his door. On the credit card tip line was a big, fat zero.
Needless to say, we won’t be delivering to Old Wingville Road anymore.
